Evolutionary Production Systems (EPS) is a paradigm created by European and international companies to achieve the goal of sustainability defined by the Councils of Lisbon and Gothenburg. This is a scenario where we are favoring a restructuring of the engineering companies instead of developing their existing production systems. All this within a shortest time possible and with minimal impact on economically and ecologically terms.
How? The EPS does not focus on solutions that try to accomplish all the needs of production laid down in a closed unit (flexible), but a solution which is based on re-configurable number, process-oriented, low granularity intelligent modules that allows a continuing evolution of the production system.
The EPS also go one step further, proposing an innovative vision, taking the products and production systems: the cycle of product design should be influenced by the modules that were available.
The EPS, with its process-oriented, distributed where a viable control and dynamic link between product design and development of production systems, can be considered as entering the realm of complex systems. Indeed, the main focus of research is to develop open system architectures with the tools and methods needed for subsequent analysis of the complex methodological development of the system.
